GENERAL INFORMATION
|
ISABELA |
Named for Isabel Queen of Spain, Isabela is
also known as: "El Jardín del Noroeste", "La Ciudad De Los
Gallitos", "El Pueblo de los Quesitos de Hoja".
Patron Saint: San Antonio de Padua (San Antonio de la Tuna).
Barrios: Arenales Altos, Arenales Bajos, Bajuras, Bejucos, Coto,
Galateo Alto,
Galateo Bajo, Guayabos, Guerrrero, Jobos, Llanada, Mora, Planas
Before the
European invasion this area was one of the most important Taíno
chiefdoms and was known as Guajataca (Taíno for "The Water Ladle").
The Cacíque, Mabodomaca was one of the leaders during the Indian
Wars. Legend has it that when his warriors could no longer hold back
the invaders he led his people up the Guajataca River and
disappeared into the mountains.
In 1725 the first European settlers built a town near the Guajataca
River and named it San Antonio de la Tuna. The area was later
abandoned until the early 1800's when it was resettled. On May
21, 1819 the town was founded.
Isabela is part of Arecibo's Senatorial District, covers
approximately 55.4 square miles and is situated on the north west
coast near Aguadilla. Isabela's principal economic activities are:
tourism, industry, dairy products, livestock, leather goods, tabaco.
Isabela's reef-lined Atlantic beaches (Jobos, Shacks, Surfer's
Beach, Secret Spot, Guajataca, Pastillo, Table Top, Sardinera,
Montones, etc.) are ideal for swimming, surfing, fishing, diving,
snorkeling and other water sports.
