Maboya, the Evil Bush Spirit. Taino folklore describe them as shape-shifting
nocturnal spirits... the souls of persons who had committed evil deeds during
their lifetime and upon dying were doomed to wander Borinquen's forest and
beaches for eternity. Hidden in dark places during the day they would come
out after sunset to destroy crops and seduce the women who were urged to
wear amulets for protection. Maboya were considered to be the personification
of all evil and were feared by all the natives to the extent that elaborate
rituals and sacrifices were offered to placate them.
