CAMUY
Founded in 1807 by Petrolina Matos,
the town derives its name from the Taino word "Camuy",
which means Sun. Patron Saint: San José.
Camuy is known as: "La Ciudad Romántica", and "La Ciudad del Sol
Taíno".
Camuy is part of Arecibo's Senatorial
District, covers approximately 46.49 square miles and is situated on
the north coast near Arecibo. Camuy's principal economic activities
are: tourism, industry and agriculture.
Situated on the
northwest coast of the island Camuy's reef-lined Atlantic beaches
(Peñon Brussi, Peñon Amador, etc.) are ideal for surfing, fishing,
snorkeling and diving and other water sports.
Camuy is best
known for its world-famous, Rio Camuy Caverns, a 268 acre ecosystem
that is part of this hemisphere's most impressive subterranean cave
network, carved by the mighty Rio Camuy. Visitors board trams that
take them through dense tropical vegetation down into Cueva
Clara. At this awe-inspiring underground cave park you can
experience a magical ambiance created by nature. |
